For the last race of the Labor Day Series in early September, sailors had to sail with a crew. Most brought their young children or found other kids to join them. If they didn't have a crew, they had to start 5 minutes later in the 5-mile round Dutch Island race on Narragansett Bay.
Late afternoon, late summer sunshine enhances the color of some of the sailboats moored outside Wickford Harbor. What a beautiful weekend on Narragansett Bay!
Blue Yankee at left is in a good position a few minutes after the start -- spectator boats are scrambling to stay out of the way of Rambler on the right.
Blue Yankee is the righthand vessel of the two sailing close together in this photo -- pretty good start -- more than 600 nautical miles (upwind) to go.
Son Jesse is racing to Bermuda on Blue Yankee -- USA 25-- this shot shows them off Castle Hill in Newport about 30 minutes before their start yesterday.
Visit www.bermudarace.com to learn more about the race -- from there, you can also link to a tracking site to follow their progress.
Tall Ships Rhode Island 2007 hosted ships from as far away as Indonesia and India and as close as Salem and Providence. Pictured here are the Barquentine 'Dewa Ruci' from the Navy of Indonesia on the left, the Sloop 'Providence' (center) from the Rhode Island capital and the 171-foot 'Friendship' completed in 1998 as a replica of a 1797 Salem East Indiaman.
The 2008 ASTA Tall Ships Challenge Series will be sailed on the west coast this summer. Visit www.sailtraining.org for more details.
Spirit of Bermuda, a Bermuda Sloop designed after an 1831 painting of a Bermuda rigged schooner in the Royal Navy, was commissioned in 2006 in Rockport, Maine and then sailed to Bermuda, her new home. She is pictured here at Tall Ships Rhode Island last July. For more information on the ship and her mission of preparing young people for life and employment, visit www.bermudasloop.org.
Three vessels participate in the Tall Ships Challenge series in Newport last July: (from left) the naval sail training ship Cisne Branco from Brazil, the new Schooner Virgina from Norfolk and the Pride of Baltimore II.
Our neighbor built this beautiful little ketch in his garage and sails it in Wickford Harbor and on Narragansett Bay. Wish I had time and motivation for that kind of project!
Son Lyle raced at the Sound School in New Haven this fall in a memorial regatta to honor their coach Joe Manganello. It was a cold and beautiful sailing day.
We'll leave it to our other blogging friends to cover fish and fillies on Friday; here we have a striking schooner and a comfortable ketch out on Narragansett Bay on a brisk fall day.
Son Jesse had a great opportunity last year -- he raced as part of a team of 12 young adults on the TP 52 'Morning Light' in the Transpac race from L.A. to Honolulu. The project was sponsored by Roy Disney and a feature film about their selection, training and racing is being completed for release in the fall. Photo shows their arrival day in Honolulu -- they finished second in their division. More photos to follow.
