Sonic Racer -- Anguilla

Look at the length of that boom! It doesn't do much for sail shape upwind, but the fancy jib probably helps.

what I don't get is why they have such long booms and yet they don't have bowsprits! You would have thought that if they're that keen to carry so much canvas that a bowsprit would be an obvious development.

Good observation -- must be those pesky class rules!

hey, I live in Anguilla and race on that same boat. Yes l know that their booms are extremely long and the sail shape is pretty poor, but that design is part of our tradition and culture and we don't want to change it even if it does mean making our boats go faster. Even with the sail shape we still manage to maintain a good speed of 8-10 knots going upwind but hold incredible height. You should come to our island and watch a race for yourself, it's very exciting. Anyways I just commented not to be rude, but to explain why we have such long booms on our boats. Thankyou
