Sunfish Racing on Narragansett Bay

These Sunfish are starting a marathon race -- almost 26 miles (including tacking) around Jamestown (Conanicut Island) in Narragansett Bay. The race is run every few years from the Saunderstown Yacht Club. The race is divided into two sections with a stop for lunch in beautiful downtown Jamestown.

What do you think of Josh's hiking style?

What is that crazy kid doing? And what year is this picture from?

I did this race the year of Sunfish 50th anniversary celebration. There was a race and parade of boats in Newport on the Saturday, and then the round Jamestown race on Sunday as I recall. I think it was 2000.

The photo is from a more recent Jamestown rounding -- didn't you get a 5th place in 2000? We may have another rounding this year or in 2007. We'll keep you posted through the blog.

I don't remember where I finished in 2000 - though 5th sounds about right. It was certainly an awesome experience.

That was the first time I had heard of the race and I was assuming it was held every year. When one of the organizers told me it wasn't an annual event I was most disappointed.

As you may have read in my blog we are planning to move to Rhode Island some time this year. So I look forward to hearing about any future round the island races.

Glad to hear you'll be moving to RI -- lots of great sailing all the time.

Laser frostbiting in Newport and Sunfish in Barrington -- quite a few other fleets as well.

Let us know when you make the move.
